We, the community at Whitix.org, see Whitix as the desktop operating system of the future. Users today require simplicity and stability, and Whitix's design, based on a combination of UNIX stability and the user-friendliness of other platforms such as Windows, will ensure each and every desktop user can use a computer without complex configuration or expert knowledge of hardware and software.

We see a future where simple and intuitive user interfaces are the norm, not the exception. We envisage an environment that supports an end-user in their day-to-day tasks, from document processing to playing games. It will be as simple and as lightweight as possible. We see a clearer future for desktop operating systems, and, with the power and efficiency of the open source community, we'll provide an easy-to-use development environment that utilises dynamic, manage and high-level languages, so anyone can contribute to Whitix.

The desktop

From the viewpoint of the user, we want to replace the traditional filesystem with a new document store, following on from projects like GNOME Storage. Documents will be first class entities in the new desktop, which is codenamed Blaze. Features for the 21st century Whitix desktop will include:

  • Searching using natural language phrases. Utilising natural language techniques from the linguistics community, Blaze will allow users to access documents based on attributes and associations.
  • Revisioning and history. Logging of changes to documents will occur on a desktop-wide basis, and a revision system will allow users to edit and review previous revisions of saved documents, and will enable queries like "List the documents I edited yesterday".

The new Blaze desktop is in the planning stages. See the Blaze section of the wiki for more information on the desktop of the future.
